Call for Parent Hints and Tips!

13 Jan 2021

As we are all adjusting to this new way of learning, lots of parents have contacted me to express concerns about their child's concentration and attentions spans. I fully understand the difficulties this presents.

So my 'plea' is this:

Are there any hints and tips you could share either in the comments or on the homework section below to share with other parents so we can all help each other! Maybe things you have found work this week, or from a previous lockdown!

I did suggest last week making your own reward systems tailored to your child's needs and interests to encourage and motivate the best way that works in each of your homes and circumstances.

We have many weeks ahead of us so finding a routine and a system that works now will help you feel less overwhelmed moving forwards.

I will post hints and tips below as they come in!

1. Having a set timetable so your child knows when its work time, when its play time, and when its lunch/snack time etc. (children thrive off structure and routine)
2. Have a reward system in place to motivate and encourage.
3. Give them something to look forward to as an end of task/ day/ week treat to keep them working hard and something to work towards.
4. Having a set work place so they know this area is for work, and when they aren't in this area they aren't doing work- maybe a certain spot at the table or on a little desk/ coffee table etc. of their own. This will help them differentiate between work time and play time.
5. An end of week treat that they can engage with on the weekend- such as letting them chose a new book or toy to read or play with after finishing their tasks on a Friday!
6. Remind them we are doing purple ribbon still (Thursday 2:30pm), and that from next week I will be giving out house points too!
7. "I've threatened my child with the thought that Miss. Gregory will come and do a home visit and make them work even harder than all the other children if they don't try. this is doing the trick so far!"
-(Miss. Gregory fully supports using her name in any manner if it works! 😂)
8. Lots and LOTS of stickers!
