Year Two Accelerated Reader

04 Nov 2024

FAO: Year Two Parents (whose children are not already on the AR Reading System)

On Monday 4th November I completed a STAR assessment with your child as they are ready to move on from Phonics Books. From Monday, your child will come home with an Accelerated Reader book.

This book will have a decimal point coding system on the side- the ZPD range. They need to read this book and ensure they understand it. They will then complete a quiz within school online on the Accelerated Reader site.

If the child gets 90% or 100% on their quiz, they can move up 0.1 on their ZPD range.
If the child gets 80% on their quiz then they stay on the same ZPD range but can choose a new book.
If the child gets 70% or below on their quiz, then the child drops down 0.1 on their ZPD range.

This means to start with, your child may get a new book daily, as they build up through the ZPD ranges. The higher the ZPD range, the more pages/ detail there are in the books, so new books may become less frequently.

I will always write their Accelerated Reader Book in their Reading Record (for example: AR 1.6 The hungry Caterpillar LMG).
Their ‘Free reader’ book they choose will also have a ZPD range on as all books in school have been labelled. Their reading book is the one written in their reading records and signed by my initials (or another member of staff).

There is also a section on ‘School News’ on the school website titled “Reading Books” with information on too.

Please come and speak to me if you wish to have more information!

Kind Regards,
Miss. Gregory
