News from North Stainley

16 Dec 2022

Dear All

“Christmas is coming… the geese are getting fat”…. Well I’m not sure about the geese, but preparations for Christmas are certainly underway in the village!

The Staveley Arms has a special menu, including an amazing looking Yorkshire Pudding Wrap, and a new online booking service is now available on www.thestaveleyarms.co.uk

This Saturday, 17th December, The North Stainley Trust and St Mary’s are joining together to invite everyone to come and sing Carols on the Green beside the lit Beacon from 5.30 onwards. See attached flier. Time to get wrapped up enjoy a seasonal tipple and test the vocal cords.
5.30pm Beacon lighting.
5.40pm Mulled wine, mince pies & kiddies chocs.
6.00pm Carols led by Clive Mansell.
We would love you to join us and your neighbours for a festive get together to kick off the celebrations.

On Sunday at 9.15, St Mary’s will be holding a Service of Holy Communion with Carols.

On Christmas Eve at 4pm there will be a short, family friendly Christingle Service in church. A lovely way to start the Christmas weekend!

On Christmas Day itself St Mary’s will be holding a Family Communion Service at 9.15 – time to come to church and then get home in time to make the lunch! All welcome.

In that time between Christmas And New Year, the Cricket Club will be holding their Twixmas Quiz on December 29th at 6pm at the Staveley Arms. The Quizmasters will be John Skinner and Andy Purll from Ripon Runners. It should be a popular evening and you are advised to get there early!

Looking into the New Year, make a date in your new diary for Soupy Saturday – 14th January, 12-2pm, in the Village Hall
Following on from the Village Trust’s successful coffee morning last November, St Mary's would like to offer another possibility for the community to come together in the Village Hall on a Saturday ….. this time for "Soupy Saturday!". Come and enjoy a bowl of home-made soup (there will be a choice available) and a roll followed by tea, coffee and cake. Donations will go towards the upkeep, ministry and work of our village church. Further details from Sally (

Then also look out for details of the North Stainley Arts Society Pantomime – Treasure Island. It is described as a swashbuckling panto full of fun and special effects! 2nd, 3rd and 4th February, in the Village Hall.  Tickets and more information from Glenys and Frank. 01765 635236

As you may be aware, the January edition of the Parish Magazine is sadly going to be the last (for now anyhow). Huge thanks to Christine Greensit for editing it and her team of helpers for distributing it (especially John, Scilla and others in our area). Please keep an eye out for notices of events which will be posted on the various noticeboards in our village. The North Stainley village website has recently been revamped and so please check on there for upcoming events and general information about the village (northstainley.org.uk). News and events are also posted on our village church Facebook page, on the website for the Masham group of churches and on the Methodist circuit website.

North Stainley School, the parish council, the Staveley Arms and the cricket club all have their own websites and some have Facebook pages as well.
The Masham Community Office sends out a weekly email containing local news and events. Please contact them if you would like to be sent this useful resource.

Since covid, I have been sending out these occasional emails with news of events etc in the village. This is done in a personal, “unofficial” capacity to those for whom I have an email address. If you know of others who would be interested in receiving these, please ask them to contact me directly on janemansell21@gmail.com. If they do not have computer access and would like to receive a printed copy, please contact me on 01765 634682. Thanks.

With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year
